This course will serve as an introduction to the topic of cold-formed steel framing in mid-rise construction. It will explore the ever-changing building code requirements for cold-formed steel framing. Specific emphasis will be on both the 2018 International Building Code and 2018 International Energy Code.
The overall focus of the training will be meeting the fire, sound and energy requirements specific to mid-rise construction. The program will begin with an overview of cold-formed steel framing.
The discussion will then describe ways to conform with the energy requirements. Integrating building code compliant fire resistance into the cold-formed steel framing of mid-rise construction is investigated. The program will finish with suggestions on how to meet the acoustical requirements for both partitions and floor-ceiling assemblies utilizing cold-formed steel framing.
- Specify cold-formed steel framing to be compliant with the 2018 International Building Code in both structural and nonstructural applications.
- Sketch the use of cold-formed steel framing to meet the thermal requirements in the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code.
- Summarize cold-formed steel framing in fire resistive assemblies as required by the 2018 International Building Code for use in mid-rise construction.
- Stipulate cold-formed steel framed systems that will meet the acoustical requirements found in the 2018 International Building Code.
Robert Grupe has spent over 38 years with United States Gypsum Company. During his time at USG, he has held various technical and management positions, including product and system design and technical consultation to the AEC community.
Now Bob is the Program General Manager for the Steel Framing Industry Association as well as the Director of Technical Services for the Association of Wall and Ceiling Industry (AWCI). Other activities includes serving as the Vice Chair on the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings.
